Ruben Amorim jokes crocked Bruno Fernandes ‘wants my job’ as Man Utd skipper refuses to stay away from training

BRUNO FERNANDES has already asked Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim if he can resume training.

Fernandes sustained a hamstring injury in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on December 21 and was ruled out for “a while”.

The 31-year-old could be sidelined for up to a month and the 1-0 win against Newcastle on Boxing Day was only the third United match Fernandes has missed through injury.

Despite Fernandes’ eagerness, Amorim stressed there is “no chance” of the United captain playing against Wolves on Tuesday night.

Fernandes was pitchside before United’s victory against Newcastle and he tends to watch training sessions he is not involved in on recovery days.

Amorim joked that Fernandes might have his eye on the United manager’s job amid his training ground presence.

Amorim said: “Bruno was already saying that he needs to train. But we don’t know.

“No chance he (Fernandes) is going to play against Wolves, no chance. You can write that.

“He cannot be that guy that when he is not playing, he’s not talking and speaking. He’s always speaking.

“That’s why he’s the captain. He has bad things sometimes, the way move his arms, but he has a lot of good things and he’s always leaving the game.

“The practice, every time he makes recovery, he is the guy that is going to watch the other guys training that day.

“So there are a lot of things that you guys don’t see but that he does. He’s a great leader all the time.

“He’s the guy that is watching training even after treatment. He’s going there.

“I don’t know if he wants my job or not! But he’s a leader. The guy is a leader.”

Kobbie Mainoo is scheduled to resume training soon after a calf problem but United will still be without Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt (back), Harry Maguire (thigh) against basement club Wolves.

Mason Mount will be assessed after his half-time removal against Newcastle while Noussair Mazraoui, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad are still on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Amorim added: “Kobbie Mainoo is going to start on the pitch also, so we will see.

“Matthijs is struggling a little bit. Harry the same thing. So I don’t expect to have the players for this game.

“I don’t know how Mase is going to be for the game. I think Kobbie Mainoo is not going to be ready. Bruno is not going to be ready.

“I think Matthijs is not going to be ready. Harry is not going to be ready.

“I don’t know how Mase is going to be for that game.”
