Rob Edwards’ Middlesbrough future in serious doubt as press conference CANCELLED due to crunch talks about Wolves move

ROB EDWARDS’ Middlesbrough future was plunged into doubt as the club cancelled his scheduled 1pm press conference amid speculation linking him with managerless Wolves.

SunSport understands that Edwards, 42, has now entered crunch talks with his current employers and is pushing for a return to Molineux.

Edwards was due to address the media ahead of his side’s Championship home clash with Birmingham City on Saturday.

But that event has been axed just two hours before the former Wales international was due to speak.

We revealed yesterday that Boro chairman Steve Gibson was standing firm regarding the exLuton boss and rejected an initial approach.

SunSport also revealed there is NO release clause in Edwards’ current contract – with Boro due a cool £3m in compensation should he demand to leave.

But Wolves are still determined to bring Edwards back after the knockback and he has informed Boro of his desire to speak with them.

Edwards only took charge of Boro and penned a three-year deal in the summer. He got off to an impressive start but only two wins from their last eight have seen the Teessiders slip out of the top two.

SunSport understands that he has met senior Riverside chiefs this morning to try and thrash out his future and an official announcement is expected this afternoon.

Wolves made him their priority target, after original choice Gary O’Neil pulled out of the running earlier this week.

The Premier League’s bottom team are frantically looking to replace Vitor Pereira, who was sacked following the Midlands club’s 3-0 Prem defeat to Fulham on Saturday.

Edwards was chosen after Wolves’ football leadership group, led by executive chairman Jeff Shi, decided to zero in on the former boss of the club’s Under-18s.

Alongside his coaching experience with the outfit, Edwards spent four years on the playing staff between 2004-08, making 100 appearances.

Wolves are winless in their opening ten fixtures, securing just two points and have already been beaten by each of last season’s clubs that were promoted from the Championship.
