Rival protesters clash as anti-immigration march comes face to face with counter demonstration as police efforts to keep them apart crumble

Rival protesters collided in Southampton after an anti-immigration march came face-to-face with their counter demonstrators.

A large right wing protest, led by Tommy Robinson and has taken to the streets in the city to voice their concerns about illegal migration.

At the same time, Stand Up To Racism also held a counter-demonstration, marching nearby to East Park in the city.

Ahead of the protests, police blocked a main road in order to keep the two groups apart.

Portswood Road in the city was sealed off, disrupting local traffic and public transport in order to prevent any meeting between the two protests.

However in one tense moment, an onlooker appeared to get close to the anti-immigration group outside St Denys train station.

A video showed the moment when a bottle was allegedly thrown at the group, sending them into a frenzy.

The passerby was watching the right-wing protest from a high vantage point on a footbridge above the demonstration.

He was bundled to the ground after throwing the bottle and the bridge was blocked by police.

The Daily Echo reported that the man was led away from the scene by police.

The demonstration erupted into anger, with several running after the person and dozens of others shouting in anger.

Danny Tommo, once described as Robinson’s right-hand man, reportedly chased after the man.

It was claimed that Tommo was pepper sprayed by police as he tried to confront the person involved.

The right-wing protest then made their way towards Highfield House Hotel in Portswood, where asylum seekers are currently being housed.

Speaking before the demonstrations, Assistant Chief Constable Paul Bartolomeo said: ‘Our priority, as always, is keeping the public safe and preventing crime and disorder’.

‘We have been working closely with organisers, local partners and the community to ensure we balance the rights of those peacefully protesting and the rights of others to go about their lives without being subject to serious disruption.’
