A Florida politician who had her sights set on Congress was killed on Wednesday in what police are labeling a domestic violence incident.
Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer-Bowen was shot to death in her home, according to Florida Politics. The site reported that Metayer-Bowen, a Democrat, was planning to run for a congressional seat.
The incident was discovered when Coral Springs police were called to her home at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to CBS.
Metayer-Bowen was found dead when police arrived.
I’m in shock. I was just with her on Saturday. She just buried her brother. She was about to announce she was running for Congress. Nancy was one of the nicest people I worked with. Always fighting for her community, always pushing to help. She had such a future. This is terrible https://t.co/rjWaFneQN7

Police believed the crime was domestic, and began a search for her husband.
Florida Politics said that Stephen Bowen, her husband, was found at a friend’s house.
He was charged with premeditated murder and tampering with fabricated evidence, CBS noted.

“On behalf of our entire family, we are deeply saddened to share the passing of my beloved sister Nancy Metayer-Bowen,” the family said in a statement.
“While many knew her as a leader and advocate, we knew her as a sister, a daughter, and a friend whose warmth and laughter filled every room. Her legacy will live on not only in the policies she helped to shape, but in the countless lives she touched. We are grateful for the outpouring of support and kindness during this difficult time. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate her remarkable life and the lasting impact she leaves behind,” the family statement said.
Metayer Bowen’s brother, Joshua, 26, killed himself in December after years of suffering from schizophrenia, according to Florida Politics.
