Raging mum smashed glass into love rival’s neck & called her a ‘d***head’ during drunken row at her boyfriend’s funeral

A RAGING mum smashed a glass into her love rival’s neck during a drunken row at her boyfriend’s funeral.

Shannon Morgan, 27, was at a wake for Royston Coates when she came across Lisa Wilson, who used to date her previous partner.

The pair began rowing about a child being under the pool table as Morgan played with a pal.

She then smashed a glass into Lisa’s neck – leaving her with a 3cm cut that needed stitches.

Morgan avoided jail after admitting causing grievous bodily harm and was instead handed a 12 month sentence, suspended for two years.

Crewe Magistrates’ Court heard the horror unfolded at the Ivy Leaf pub in Cheshire on October 14 last year.

A wake was taking place for Morgan’s partner Royston, who passed away aged just 32.

Scott Woodward, prosecuting, said: “Miss Wilson and the defendant both know each other and there is a history of them not getting along with one another.

“The defendant has been playing pool with a friend and child and that child was observed under the pool table.

“Miss Wilson spoke to the defendant about this, not wanting the child to get hurt. But the defendant then accused Miss Wilson of dragging the child from under the table following which the women had an argument in the bar area.

“The defendant told Miss Wilson ‘Just drop it, d***head’ and Miss Wilson turned to get a drink from the bar. As she has done this, the defendant has proceeded to smash a glass into the side of her neck or face.

“Miss Wilson had then looked down to see her clothes covered in blood. She sustained a wound to the neck. Miss Morgan ran outside of the public house.”

The court heard Lisa initially refused any medical attention but later attended Macclesfield hospital for treatment.

In a victim impact statement, she said she still feels “anxious” about social events as her physical and mental health have been affected.

Lisa added: “I received stitches in my neck following the attack. I was told I was very lucky to be alive. The wound was millimetres from my jugular.

“To say I was scared would be an understatement. I still have nightmares.

“Since the incident, my confidence has dropped massively. I feel anxious. I struggle sleeping. I wake up in the night panicking.

“The anxiety attacks happen unexpectedly. As I have never suffered with anything like this in the past, I find it hard to deal with.

“I also have unwanted thoughts of myself dying or family members.”

In mitigation, Morgan’s lawyer Gabby Black said the thug was “clearly emotional” after her boyfriend was laid to rest.

As well as a suspended jail sentence, Morgan was ordered to pay £720 in compensation and handed a two-year restraining order.

She was also told to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activity and wear an electronic ‘sobriety’ tag as part of a 120 day alcohol abstinence programme.

Sentencing, JP Tim Bakkers said: “The attack was potentially life ending and the victim impact statement details some significant life changes that this lady has had to go through immediately after the incident.

“But we have also taken into account the circumstances of that evening, what that evening represented, your previous good character, and in particular your own personal circumstances.”
