PRIMARY school children will be given compulsory lessons on “climate justice” under a Labour curriculum shake-up.
Teachers will be expected to lecture young kids on “possible solutions” to the “serious challenges facing our planet”.
But the proposals sparked uproar last night, with Tories telling ministers to focus on improving literacy.
Spotting fake news, artificial intelligence and financial literacy will also be taught to kids aged 11 and below from spring 2027, following a major review of the school curriculum.
Becky Francis, who chaired the review, said: “It is crucial that young people are empowered with the necessary knowledge to thrive in tomorrow’s industries and tackle the serious challenges facing our planet.”
Laura Trott, Shadow Education Secretary, blasted: “Labour’s idea of boosting social mobility is to teach primary school children about climate change instead of making sure they can read, write and add up properly.
“This will leave children with a weaker understanding of our national story and hide standards slipping in schools.”
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: “From the fundamentals of reading to the present danger of spotting fake news, these landmark reforms will help young people step boldly into the future, with the knowledge to achieve and the skills to thrive as the world around us continues to rapidly evolve.”
