Premier League cult hero reveals brutal way Marinakis sacked him

ANGE Postecoglou’s sacking may have been brutal but Nottingham Forest legend Martin O’Neill claims his dismissal could top it.

Former Tottenham boss Postecoglou got his second sacking in four months at Nottingham Forest after failing to win any of his eight games in charge.

The decision came after Forest’s 3-0 home loss to Chelsea on Saturday.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis – who today appointed Sean Dyche as manager – reportedly “stormed out” of the Chelsea match during the second half and sacked fellow Greek Postecoglou 20 minutes after the full-time whistle.

Former Forest player and manager Martin O’Neill has now spoken out on his experience with Marinakis.

The 73-year-old was appointed manager at the City Ground in early 2019. He was sacked six months later, after winning eight of his 19 games in charge.

The search for a replacement didn’t last long and a new boss was announced 18 minutes after he got the boot – whilst O’Neill was still in his office.

Speaking on the situation, Forest’s double European Cup winner told talkSPORT: “I can laugh about it now, but Marinakis himself personally didn’t sack me – he allowed the chief executive and the director of football [to do it]

“They sacked me at the time – that’s fine.

“I’m still in my office 24 minutes later when they announced the new manager. Just allow me a bit of time to get out of the office.”

TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan suggested Marinakis had been “too trigger-happy” with his decision to sack Postecoglou

Sympathising with the 2024 Europa League winner, Jordan said: “I don’t like the fact that he fired him straight after the game. I don’t think it’s necessary.

“I think ultimately he could have let it settle, phoned the manager up when the manager left the ground and gone, ‘We’ve run our course here’, and that conversation could have been had between the pair of them.”

O’Neill suggested that the owner’s decision was disrespectful, adding: “Out of respect maybe for the manager in that sense, you might do it on a Sunday, you might do it late on a Saturday night.

“He (Marinakis) didn’t do it himself – I don’t think that’s great, that’s not respectful. In fairness he didn’t do it to me either.”

Postecoglou’s dismissal was branded “savage” as fans jumped to his defence, calling Marinakis’ decision to dismiss him “unnecessarily harsh”.
