POST Office hero Sir Alan Bates has reportedly won up to £5million compensation from the Government.
It comes more than 20 years after he started campaigning for victims of the Horizon computer scandal.
Sir Alan, knighted last year, revealed in the spring that he had been given a “take it or leave it” offer, and it was confirmed yesterday that a settlement has been reached.
The figure has not been made public but it was reportedly between £4-5million.
Between 1999 and 2015, more than 900 sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted for theft and fraud.
Sir Alan, who lost £65,000 due to the faulty software, set out to exonerate the victims, with his courage and persistence documented in ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office.
The Department for Business and Trade said: “We pay tribute to Sir Alan for his long record of campaigning on behalf of victims and have now paid out over £1.2billion to more than 9,000 victims.
“We can confirm Sir Alan’s claim has reached the end of the scheme process and been settled.”
Around 3,200 claims are thought to still be outstanding.
