Rachel Reeves looks set to scrap the two-child benefit cap at the Budget later this month, potentially leaving thousands of Britain’s biggest jobless families in line for extra payouts from the taxpayer.
Keir Starmer has all but confirmed the cap will be lifted earlier this week as he seeks to shore up his leadership against challenges from the left and right.
The Treasury had drawn up plans to ‘taper’ the payments to prevent huge handouts to the biggest families currently affected by the cap.
But, following a Labour backlash, ministers have now reportedly decided to abolish the cap in full at a cost of £3.5billion a year.
Critics of the cap claim it has worsened child poverty, and that scrapping it would lift thousands of families from below the bread line.
Lisa and David White, from Monmouth, South Wales, have five children and as neither has worked for three years, are among those set to gain from the move. They could receive up to £10,000 extra each year.
In our last poll, Mail readers were asked: Would Wes Streeting be a better prime minister than Sir Keir Starmer?
Out of more than 14,000 votes, 68 percent said ‘Yes’ and 32 percent said ‘No’.
