Britain is heading for a ‘massive crimewave’, the Conservatives have warned after the impact of Labour‘s soft justice masterplan was highlighted in a damning official report.
Tory justice spokesman Robert Jenrick said the National Audit Office study showed that probation officers ‘won’t be able to cope’ with huge numbers of criminals handed community punishments instead of jail.
The report, published today, concluded that Labour’s plan to send fewer offenders to prison will increase pressure on the beleaguered service and could leave the public at greater risk.
Spending watchdogs found probation will have a staffing shortfall of more than 3,000 next year, partly due to the Government’s sentencing reforms.
They added that changes to the way offenders are supervised in the community ‘may pose a risk to public protection’.
