Is Zohran Mamdani a communist?
President Trump says yes. PolitFact says he is a lying liar lying liberally. Mamdani is just “neighborly,” to use Tim Walz’ description of socialism.
The fine folks at the Poynter Institute, who run PolitiFact, are quite certain that Mamdani is not a communist, even after some enterprising folks dug up a video of Mamdani explaining that his goal is to “seize the means of production.”
They even suggested that it was a lighthearted joke:
Geoffrey Kurtz, an associate political science professor at Borough of Manhattan Community College, said listening to the video clip and watching Mamdani, “I had the impression that Mamdani intended that phrase as lighthearted hyperbole. I see no reason to assume that the phrase conveys anything precise about what he thinks.”
Nope, nosiree, Mamdani just wants to be your neighbor. He is Mr. Rogers without a cardigan.

Trump isn’t backing down. Not known for mincing words, he keeps saying that Mamdani is a communist, proving that he is a lying liar who lies liberally.
“He is a communist. I’ve said there will never be socialism in the United States, so we have a Communist. I think I’m going to have a lot of fun with him because he has to come right to this building to get his money.”

Now perhaps you might take PolitiFact at their word that they see no similarity between Mamdani’s call for seizing the means of production and Marx’s call for seizing the means of production–after all, correlation does not equal causation. But once you start going through Mamdani’s statements, it is hard not to notice that he and Marx seem to have pretty much the same ideas.
Mamdani is literally a Communist.

Still, liberals will insist that since Mamdani doesn’t explicitly SAY that he is a communist, you can’t accuse him of being a communist without being a lying liar who lies liberally.

By that standard, every criminal in jail who didn’t explicitly SAY they committed a crime is innocent, except Donald Trump. He is a felon.
There really is no length to which the Pravda Media will not go to protect leftists, whatever they do or whatever they say. Rioters are “mostly peaceful,” MS 13 members are “fathers” and “Maryland residents,” and Adam Schiff is a truth-teller.
Fact-checkers are the worst of the bunch because they take the ordinary claims to infallibility that most journalists assume and take them to a new level. They present themselves as the arbiters of truth itself, rather than just as the proper guardians of information distribution.
Zohran Mamdani is a communist. Anybody who quotes Marx, wants to abolish private property and “seize the means of production” is obviously a communist.
But communists are hard to elect, and Mamdani is their guy.
That’s how this works.
