Police probe launched after Royal British Legion volunteers abused by ‘left-wing idiots’ as they put up poppies in town

ROYAL British Legion volunteers were abused by “left-wing idiots” while they put up Remembrance Day poppies in a town.

The helpers faced foul-mouthed threats as they attached the symbols and Union Jacks to a lamppost on a roundabout.

South Wales Police confirmed they were investigating an alleged public order offence in Penarth, near Cardiff.

Mum Karen Jones, an RBL helper in the town, said: “Our volunteers were approached and met with abuse and threats to come back and take the poppies and flags down.

“You don’t expect such a thing.

“Our Poppy Appeal is not political. It’s to remember the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that people have free speech.”

Shoppers were appalled to learn the sellers were given a hard time.

Pete Humphreys, 58, said: “It’s disgusting.

“Some of these so-called left-wingers need to realise that previous generations stood up to real fascists and the poppy is a way of remembering that sacrifice.”

Dad Martyn Thomas, 41, said: “Remembrance Day should be something that brings us together.”
