THE foreign minister of Cyprus was quite clear. If Britain is not going to defend its base on the island, we need to consider our future ownership of it.
Constantinos Kombos said that there was “displeasure” in Cyprus over our shameful failure not to send forces to ward off Iranian attacks.

This is the real consequence of Sir Keir Starmer’s disastrous dithering over Middle East intervention.
Not only are we humiliated on the world stage and at odds with our oldest ally, the United States.
But we will now face calls to surrender vital sovereign territories that have defended Britain’s overseas interests for centuries.
The UK operates at least seven major bases between Cyprus and the Persian Gulf — all of which support missions across the Middle East.
Between them, they hold more than 2,500 of our military personnel plus thousands of dependents and contractors.
Not supporting them wholeheartedly is more than just a failure of political nerve.
It leaves our country prey to its enemies.
Vladimir Putin and the Ayatollah had already let loose killers on the streets of our cities.
Our weakness on Iran will only convince tyrants everywhere that we are a pushover.
The malign influence of peacenik Ed Miliband is all over the PM’s lily-livered legal stance.
It was Ed, you may remember, who helped block military action in 2013 against the Syrian regime which gassed its own population.
Labour’s leadership are also running scared over Muslim votes after the loss at the polls in Gorton and Denton.
A by-election defeat does not necessarily spell disaster for a government.
Between June 24, 1982, and March 24, 1983, there were seven and the Tories did not win a single one.
Yet a few months later, Margaret Thatcher went on to seal a thumping General Election victory.
But then, Maggie had the Falkland Islands.
Sir Keir does not even have the Chagos Islands.
Pray for his victims
CHILD killer Ian Huntley is finally in hell.
But don’t spare a thought for the evil monster who murdered two ten-year-old girls.
Instead, say a prayer today for his innocent victims, best friends Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells.
And the poor families whose lives he destroyed.
