It’s important to keep pigeons out of your garden as not only do they damage plants, but their droppings can carry diseases which can contaminate soil.

Not only this, but while pigeons don’t generally attack people, as well as spreading diseases, they can also carry more than 50 types of ectoparasites, many of which are incredibly harmful.

Having said that, getting rid of pigeons once they have settled on your property is tricky as wild birds are protected in Britain and you cannot disturb their nests.

However, it turns out it is easy to prevent them from being attracted to your garden in the first place.

Gardening experts from FantasticPestControl have suggested a simple trick that will deter the ‘bully breed’ from your outside space – and for good.

According to the experts, a simple household essential which you may already have in a kitchen drawer, will do just the trick.

And if your cupboards are looking empty and you’re on a budget, don’t worry, as this handy hack will cost you just 79p thanks to a bargain buy from The Range.

According to the pest pros, you will need to use string to keep pigeons away.

The experts claimed that tying a piece of string across roosting areas can keep pigeons away from gardens.

The experts explained: “Strings tied one inch above the nesting areas will make landing uncomfortable for pigeons.”

But if you haven’t got any string in your home, you’ll have to run down to The Range as quickly as you can, where you’ll find a double pack of 30m string for less than 80p.

As well as spreading airborne diseases, pigeons also produce a large number of feathers that scatter nesting material across properties.

These feathers may clog gutters, eaves and air vents, causing water build-up.

According to the pest control experts, installing an anti-roosting spike strip may also deter pigeons from landing in your garden

They added: “Choose strategic spots such as window sills and ledges to deter pigeons from landing.”

Tips for keeping pests from your garden

  • Plant companion plants such as peppermint to repel rats.
  • Place Garden Netting Pest Barrier, over your flowerbeds.
  • Fill open-top containers with beer and place in soil to repel slugs.
  • Spray plants with Neem Oil, to repel ants, flies, and spiders.
  • Dust your flowerbeds with Diatomaceous Earth.
  • Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap, 10 drops peppermint oil, and 4 cups water and spray on flowerbeds.
  • Place eggshells around your plants to protect from slugs and snails.

As well as this, the pest experts advised that guarding bird feeders will also protect gardens from the “bully bird”.

They acknowledged: “When it comes to sharing, pigeons are known as the type that doesn’t.

“As soon as you stock your bird feeders, the ‘bully bird’ will arrive promptly, scaring off the smaller birds and stealing as much food as they can fit in their beaks.

“Your only chance for bird peace is to keep these intruders away altogether.”
