THERE aren’t many cities in Europe that are known for their affordability – but this one in Romania is genuinely cheap.
You can get a coffee for as little as £2.08 and there’s plenty to do from heading into a cheap spa to wandering around a Christmas market – it’s also considered one of the most underrated destinations in Europe.
Sibiu in Romania was revealed as the 18th most underrated destination by Time Out, and while the city might not have any beaches, there’s plenty more to see.
Instead, there’s a charming and colourful old town full of German architecture as well as hints of medieval history – and with new flights, you can be there in three hours.
From October 28, Wizz Air will fly direct from Birmingham to the Romanian city.
The flights will operate twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays with fares starting from £17.99.

During autumn and winter, you’ll have to wrap up as temperatures can dip below zero.
As for what to see, there’s Piața Mare, otherwise known as The Big Square, which was first built in 1366 and filled with market stalls, cafes, restaurants and shops.
For fans of Christmas, Sibiu is a great city to visit as The Big Square transforms into a huge market.
The market has a Ferris wheel, an ice rink, festive lights, and of course lots of stalls selling food and gifts.
Dates of the festive market are yet to be confirmed but last year it started in mid-November until early January.
The Bridge of Lies is another attraction with lots of legends and myths behind it – and when lit up at night, can make for a great picture spot too.
According to Tripadvisor, another must-see place in the city is Muzeul Astra, the largest open air museum in Europe.
It’s a cheap destination too, the price of an average coffee costs 12.20 lei, which is around £2.08.
Food is also cheap, with a three-course meal for two people at a mid-range restaurant costing just under £30 on average.
When Sun Travel interviewed a Wizz Air flight attendant, she recommended a trip to Sibiu – one of her favourite places.
Flight attendant Niko said: “I’ve been to Sibiu in Romania several times already.”
She continued: “You have the mountains, so there’s lots of nature, the food is amazing, everything is cheap and the people are so friendly.
“And you should try Papanasi. It’s a Romanian dessert that’s like a doughnut. It tastes amazing, but not good if you’re on a diet.”
Essentially, a Papanasi is a fried or boiled cheese doughnut usually served with sour cream and jam – and you can pick one up for around £4 in Romania.
One woman even travelled to Romania for a spa holiday with her mum because it was cheaper than the UK – even with return flights.
