A ONE-of-a-kind £5 banknote is set to sell for an astonishing price – more than 5,000 times its face value.

Auctioneers say it is the rarest Birmingham five pound note in existence and describe its sale as a “lifetime chance” for collectors.

But the buyer will need deep pockets as it is expected to sell for around £26,000.

Andrew Pattison, head of the banknote department at Noonans, said: “The note is being sold by a long-term collector of high-end Bank of England notes, and we believe it is the rarest Birmingham £5 in existence.

“It is also likely to be the most expensive, as we fully anticipate that it will match or exceed its estimate.

“With this being the only known example in private hands, when we say a once in a lifetime chance for collectors, we really mean it.”

The sale takes place on October 15.

Earlier this month, a rare 50p coin sold for more than 5,000 times its face value after a fierce eBay bidding war.

The “Lines Across The Face” 2011 Olympic Aquatics piece sold for a massive £2,606.56.

The extremely rare piece was one of 29 commemorative coins issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate the 2012 Olympics.

As well, a rare 2009 Blue Peter 50p recently sold for £180 on eBay – 360 times its face value.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, an ultra-rare 2p coin sold for £750 at auction.

The coin in question is the 1985 2p coin which has got a unique silver colour, instead of the usual bronze.
