Old Dominion University Shooting Being Investigated as Terrorism – HotAir

There were two possible terror attacks today. The one near Detroit which Ed wrote about here and another one which took place at Old Dominion University in Virginia. The attack at ODU is now being investigated as terrorism. We’ll get to why in a moment but first here’s what happened.

A gunman opened fire in a building on the campus of Old Dominion University on Thursday, killing one person and injuring two others, in what the authorities said was being investigated as an act of terrorism…

The shooting took place shortly before 10:49 a.m., when a gunman opened fire in Constant Hall, a campus building with classrooms and lecture halls, the university said. The Old Dominion University police, Norfolk police and other emergency personnel responded…

Two people who were taken by ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where one of those patients died. The other patient was in critical condition, the hospital said. Another person took himself to a hospital in Virginia Beach, according to the university police chief, Garrett Shelton, and was later released.

The shooter has been identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh and he the suspicion that this was a terrorist act was pretty easy because he’s previously been convicted of providing aid to ISIS.

The suspect was identified as 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former Virginia National Guardsman who had pleaded guilty in October 2016 to attempting to provide material support to the terror group ISIS, Dominique Evans, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Norfolk Office, said during a news conference Thursday night…

“I can tell you that we have confirmed reports that prior to him conducting this act of terrorism, he shouted, stated, ‘Allahu Akbar,’ and he was formally a subject of a FBI investigation into material supporting terrorism,” Evans told reporters.

Jalloh spent six years in the Virginia National Guard and was honorably discharged in 2015. Two years later he was convicted of providing aid to ISIS and sentenced to 11 years in prison. Fox News has published a 2016 affidavit by the FBI in support of the criminal complaint against Jalloh.

In or around late March, 2016, Unindicted Co-Conspirator 1 (UCCl), a now deceased member ofthe designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), ISIL, brokered an online introduction between confidential Human Source 1 (CHSl) and an individual later identified by the FBI as JALLOH. The initial contact between CHSl and JALLOH took place on or about March 27, 2016. Prior to his/her death, UCCl, who lived overseas, was actively plotting an attack in the United States which UCCl believed would be carried out with the assistance of both CHSl and JALLOH…

When discussing attack operations, JALLOH stated he knows such operations are “100 percent the right thing.” JALLOH then asked ifCHSl ever thought about targeted operations (targeted killings). JALLOH then identified a person by name who had organized multiple Draw the Prophet Mohammad contests inthe United States.^ JALLOH provided the general location for this individual and described this individual as “evil.” JALLOH insinuated that this individual would be an ideal focus of a targeted attack because of his/her actions against the Prophet Mohammad…

On or about July 2, 2016, at approximately 8:15 p.m., JALLOH returned to FFL and purchased a Stag Arms SAl 5.56 caliber rifle, serial number Y406052. FBI physical surveillance observed JALLOH entering and exiting FFL and an FBI Special Agent observed JALLOH purchasing the assault rifle and test firing the assault rifle at FFL’s firing range. JALLOH provided his Virginia Driver’s license and U.S Passport as forms ofidentification. Prior to JALLOH departing FFL with the purchased assault rifle, the weapon was rendered inoperable.

There’s a lot more but you get the gist. Jallow was on board with an attack, bought a gun and also offered to send money directly to ISIS. But when it came to his case he completely did a 180 and claimed he loved American and hated terrorism.

In a letter asking for a judge for leniency, Jalloh shared his self-proclaimed love for America, writing: “I have and have always had deep respect and still have respect for the American people and the American values that I pledged to serve.”

“I reject and deplore terrorism and any groups associated with it, especially ISIL. I hate how I allowed myself to be manipulated and how ISIL manipulates troubled and impressionable people like me with their religious propaganda by appealing to Islamic solidarity and a skewed interpretation of selective verses from the Quran. I feel like a complete idiot for accepting such a superficial and dishonest interpretation of Islam, and for blindly accepting what I was being told,” he wrote.

Apparently this pitch worked but it sounds like Jalloh got a sweetheart deal from the judge:

He was released in 2024 having served about half the sentence the government requested.

Finally, we don’t have to worry about a trial this time or about another judge giving Jalloh a light sentence. That’s because the room where Jalloh attacked people contained a bunch of ROTC students who responded to the attack with lethal force.

Dominique Evans, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Norfolk field office, said at a news conference that the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps students showed “extreme bravery and courage” and prevented further loss of life by stopping the suspect, identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh.

The ROTC students subdued him and “rendered him no longer alive,” Evans said. “I don’t know how else to say it.”

This story specifically says one of the students stabbed him to death. Had it not been for these students taking on a gunman with a their hands and a knife, this might have been much worse.
