Obama’s White House Counsel Was Chummy with Jeffrey Epstein – HotAir

Kathryn Ruemmler served as White House Counsel under President Obama from 2011 to 2014. Shortly after leaving the White House and returning to private practice, Ruemmler appears to have become chummy with pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. CNN published a story today highlighting some of the dozens of emails between Ruemmler and Epstein.

When billionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein needed legal advice, help responding to negative press, or just moral support, he often turned to an unexpected confidante – Kathy Ruemmler, an elite attorney who served two US presidents and was once a top candidate for US attorney general…

A CNN KFile review of Epstein’s emails and travel schedules sheds new light on his relationship with the power-broking lawyer and shows that their ties went far beyond professional advice and into the realm of a friendship…

As early as 2014, the year that Ruemmler left the Obama White House, the pair already appeared close, with Ruemmler telling Epstein in one email, “I’ll be here all week — you may get sick of me.”

Ruemmler told the Wall Street Journal back in 2023 that she regretted ever knowing Jeffrey Epstein. She claims he was just someone she knew as a “business referral source” when she was working at the law firm Latham & Watkins. She has specifically denied ever doing legal work for Epstein saying she “did not represent him and was not compensated by him.” And yet, Epstein’s estate is still arguing that many of her email exchanges with Epstein are covered by attorney client privilege.

Epstein’s estate is fighting to keep hundreds of additional emails between Ruemmler and Epstein private, arguing that they are protected by attorney-client privilege. The privilege log shows that Ruemmler continued to communicate with Epstein through at least June 2019 and suggests she was more involved with Epstein’s legal affairs than previously known.

It’s not possible to have it both ways. If she wasn’t Epstein’s attorney then nothing Epstein said or wrote to her is privileged communication and those emails should be released. Alternatively, if any of those emails are privileged, then Ruemmler must have been working for Epstein.

But as CNN’s article points out, the exchanges between the two seem to blur the lines between business and friendship. On the one hand, Ruemmler is offering him specific advice for dealing with media inquiries.

In 2019, as major outlets reexamined Epstein’s long history of sexually abusing minors, he invoked her advice directly. In a text message from that year, Epstein said Ruemmler helped him craft a public-relations statement in response to a forthcoming Washington Post editorial calling for Congress to investigate him.

Beyond trying to help him respond, she also seems personally invested in his defense. In one email she responded to a Daily Beast article about Epstein’s crimes saying, “Good lord. A novella of rehashed crap.” She recently told CNN, “I was obviously referring to the reporting, not the allegations of any victims.”

My own take is that’s not how the English language works. If you say a story is rehashed, you may be referring to the fact that there’s no new reporting it it. However, if you say it’s crap you’re making a judgment about the material itself. The intent is clearly to downplay the allegations, to brush them off as something not worthy of any further attention.

Ruemmler also is reported to have attended Epstein’s 2019 arraignment, which seems like something only a good friend or a lawyer would do.

In July 2019, all eyes were on Jeffrey Epstein as he entered a Manhattan federal courtroom in prison blues and orange sneakers. The reclusive multimillionaire, used to luxurious jaunts around the globe with powerful friends, appeared disheveled as he was charged with sexually abusing dozens of underage girls…

But while the press focused on Epstein, one high-profile spectator apparently went unnoticed—at least, unnoticed by most. Two eyewitnesses say former White House lawyer Kathryn Ruemmler was at Epstein’s court appearance that day in his support, The Daily Beast has learned.

Two people who separately attended the hearing said Ruemmler—who served as White House counsel during the Clinton and Obama administrations—had a “professional relationship” with Epstein and was seated behind his defense team.

At the same time, many of the messages between Epstein and Ruemmler don’t sound like business at all.

Emails and schedules show Ruemmler discussing articles, career advice, political developments, travel, dinners, and logistics with Epstein; being invited to — and in some instances scheduled for — dozens of meetings; and even having personal beauty appointments, including facials and a “Glam Squad” session, noted in Epstein’s calendars.

“Reminder: Kathy Ruemmler to see [redacted] today for a facial at 1pm,” read one entry from March 2016.

In 2020, Ruemmler was hired by Goldman Sachs and a year later she was promoted to the position of Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel. Even as details of her relationship with Epstein have been made public, Goldman has continued to stand by her. As always, it’s good to be a Democrat.
