A NOSTALGIC hatchback popular with Brit motorists is being brought back as a new 4×4 model.
It comes amid speculation that the UK’s top-selling EV is also being lined up for a similar overhaul.
The classic Renault 4 has been redesigned as the new off-road-influenced concept called the Savane.
In a statement on its website announcing the new vehicle, Renault said the Savane’s signature colour of jade green matches with its printed fabric roof trim.
“The wheel arches and bumpers are finished in gloss black for added sophistication,” it added.
Featuring bespoke utility-style wheels, the 4×4 is fitted inside with “deep brown” textile fabrics.
The statement added: “The interior is sophisticated, with deep brown embroidered refined textile upholstery.
“A houndstooth pattern completes the backrest and side panels.”
The addition of a second motor on the rear axle gives it a permanent four-wheel drive.
Inside the vehicle, an information screen has a new display that indicates how much power is distributed between the front and rear axles.
The move has promoted speculation that Renault bosses may give the UK’s top selling EV, the Renault 5, the 4×4 treatment too, although this has not been confirmed.
According to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the SMMT, the Renault 5 was Britain’s best‑selling electric car in October.
As The Sun reported, the 5 outsold the Tesla Model Y.
The 5’s mix of visual charm, driving fun and sensible pricing has seemingly broadened its appeal beyond typical EV adopters.
This has helped it position it as a car people want regardless of how it’s powered.
Off-roaders continue to be incredibly popular with Brit motorists.
Earlier this year, The Sun highlighted the six sturdiest 4x4s you can buy for less than £5,000 – from the iconic Land Rover to a budget Suzuki.
“Soft-roaders” have seen a rise in popularity thanks to their capabilities both on and off-road.
Despite preconceptions, these compact cars are durable, reliable and can just about conquer any rough terrain.
So much so, two of the UK’s top three best selling cars in 2024 were the Nissan Qashqai and the Kia Sportage.
