NICOLA Coughlan is set to front a new Channel 4 show which explores the manosphere from a female’s perspective.
It comes after the success of Louis Theroux’s Netflix documentary on the topic last week, and the widely-acclaimed series Adolescence.
Bridgeton and Derry Girls star Nicola, 39, is fronting the show I Am Helen, a new instalment of the ‘I Am’ series.
The series is a compilation of dramas centred around the stories of different women, and has seen the likes of Kate Winslet and Vicky McClure in the leading lady spot before.
Nicola’s on-screen love interest will be played by Peaky Blinders actor Joe Cole, with the storyline depicting the impact of him falling deeper into the manosphere, according to Deadline.
Showing it from a female’s perspective, the show will detail how toxic masculinity can impact relationships.
The series will be made up of two parts, with a premiere date yet to be released.
Nicola first announced the project last summer, but the drama’s plot wasn’t revealed.
At the time, she described the role as “an honour” to be taking on.
It comes after Louis Theroux’s Inside The Manosphere documentary, which exposed the extreme lengths some content creators are going to in order to push toxic masculinity out.
The show features HSTikkyTokky, who is seen promoting OnlyFans but says he would “disown” his own future daughter if she was to use the platform.
He says the same thing about if his future son was to come out as gay, and is seen referring to a woman as the ‘dishwasher’ just moments into the documentary.
Other scenes see Louis talking to businessman Justin Waller, who, like others in this influencer realm, push the concept of the Red Pill.
This is a reference to the drug taken in the 1999 sci-fi film The Matrix, which makes the characters see the real world they inhabit, rather than the artificial one that is presented to them.
They believe they are enlightening people, revealing the truth behind what they call “the bulls**t the modern western man has to put up with”.
They believe that the mainstream media discriminates against men with their views on gender relations.
One of the most extreme proponents is Myron Gaines, who through his Fresh & Fit podcast in the US pushes his assertion that women should not be able to vote or join the police and that women are born with value because they have “a vagina and t**s”.
Louis’ shocking deep dive into the manosphere is hot off the heels of Adolescence, the first mainstream TV show to touch on the topic.
The series has seen teenager Owen Cooper bag several accolades for his performance in the leading role.
It depicts how the transition from youth to adulthood is being negatively shaped by toxic masculinity, particularly through online radicalization.
