Nick Reiner remains on suicide watch while held in solitary confinement after doctors cite a ‘mental disability’

Nick Reiner is being held under heightened supervision inside Twin Towers Correctional Facility, where authorities say he remains on suicide watch following a mental health evaluation conducted shortly after his arrest.

A police source confirmed to People that Reiner, 32, is required to wear ‘a blue suicide-prevention smock at all times’ and is confined to solitary confinement in a single cell.

According to the outlet, his movements are ‘rigidly controlled’ and he is permitted to leave only for court appearances or medical reasons, under constant escort by jail personnel.

Reiner faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, director Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70.

Nick, 32, was arrested in connection with suspicion of murder and has no bail in connection with last Sunday’s killing of the couple, officials said Monday.

Sources indicated to Daily Mail that investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department were still in the process of compiling their case, as Hollywood stars continued to grieve the show business stalwart.

The lifeless bodies of the couple had been discovered Sunday afternoon at their home in Brentwood, California, with detectives saying they believe they died as a result of lethal stab wounds.

According to The New York Times, the couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, entered the home after receiving a call from a massage therapist who was unable to gain access to the property.

After discovering her father’s body, Romy allegedly ‘fled’ the residence and was later informed by a paramedic that her mother had also been found dead inside.

Authorities say Reiner is not permitted to communicate with anyone other than his legal counsel and authorized jail staff, per People

He does not have phone privileges, is served meals inside his cell, and is monitored at all times, including by video during escorted movement.

‘This is important so that no one compromises this high-profile case,’ the police source told People, adding that the restrictions are intended to prevent outside contact or questioning while the investigation proceeds.

Medical and mental health professionals evaluated Reiner shortly after his arrival at the facility on the morning of December 15.

According to the officer, doctors determined that he has a ‘mental disability’ and deemed him at risk, prompting the decision to place him on suicide watch.

‘When he arrived at the jail on Dec. 15, mental health staff evaluated him and determined he was at risk,’ the source said. ‘He will remain on suicide watch until a doctor clears him, which could take a long time depending on his mental health.’

The intake process for Reiner was expedited, the source added, citing the high-profile nature of the case.

He entered the jail at 8:54 a.m. and was processed, medically screened and psychologically evaluated within fewer than four hours – a timeline that is significantly faster than the typical 24-hour intake period.

‘He was medically evaluated and cleared by the medical staff, including the on-site doctor, and deemed competent enough to attend court,’ the officer said, emphasizing that this determination related solely to his ability to appear for proceedings.

While on suicide watch, Reiner is checked by a supervisor every 15 minutes, according to the source, who noted that he has not attempted self-harm.

‘He is currently struggling with mental health concerns,’ the officer said. ‘He remains alone in his cell and communicates very little.’

Reiner made his first court appearance on December 17 at Los Angeles Superior Court.

When judge asked Reiner if he agreed to to waive his right to a speedy arraignment, he said: ‘Yes, your honor.’

Nick’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, made a statement to the public saying that there were ‘very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case,’ and asked that ‘throughout this process you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward, not with a rush to judgment.’

Earlier this week, Nick’s siblings Romy, 27, and Jake, 34, released a heart wrenching statement.

‘Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,’ a statement from the grieving siblings reads.

‘The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience.

‘They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends. We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life.’

The pair asked people for ‘respect and privacy’ and urged the public to treat any speculation with ‘compassion and humanity’.

Jake and Romy said they wanted their father, a legend in Hollywood, and acclaimed photographer mother, to be remembered for the ‘incredible lives they lived and the love’ they gave.

The statement from Romy and Jake comes after their father’s close friend Billy Crystal also broke his silence to pay tribute to the late director.

The actor, who famously worked with Reiner on When Harry Met Sally, joined friends and colleagues including Larry David, Martin Short and director Barry Levinson, among others, in praising him as ‘a great comic actor’ and ‘a master storyteller’.

‘There is no other director who has his range,’ the joint statement said. It paid homage to Reiner’s incredible film career as well as to his ‘special’ 36-year marriage to ‘perfect partner’ Michele.
