The club were expected to sign Trafford from Burnley, only for the goalkeeper to favour a move to his former club, Manchester City.
Other targets, Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, have both opted for Manchester United.
Sesko is also en route to Old Trafford after turning down a switch to St James’ Park from RB Leipzig.
They also failed to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford, with the forward set to stay put.

Newcastle have managed to partly strengthen the first team this summer.
Anthony Elanga has arrived from Nottingham Forest and Aaron Ramsdale joined on loan from Southampton.
