The massive change is to come into effect today with Brits urged to check if their device will be impacted.

If an old Fire TV Stick is plugged into your TV you may need to upgrade to keep your Netflix access.

The update will only affect certain devices made in 2014 so newer models are safe for now.

Neither Netflix or Amazon offered a reason for the sudden decision with users left in the dark.

Experts have theorised that the issue could be with something called AV1 codec.

This is part of larger Netflix Premium plans and offers a higher picture quality which is not supported by the 2014 Fire Sticks.

Users have been urged to check what Fire Stick device they have to find out if they will keep their Netflix access or not.

To see what device you are using go to settings then My Fire TV then About your Fire TV.

This should tell you if your device is one of the three affected by todays change.

The three devices that are loosing their Netflix access are the Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014) the Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice remote (2014) and the Amazon Fire TV (2014).

All of the models loosing access are more than a decade old now.

Brits who want to keep their Netflix access are encouraged to upgrade to newer models that will still support the streaming platform.

To keep their access to Netflix Brits will have to upgrade to a newer model

An email should have been sent to Brits who are due to loose access to their Netflix.

Netflix said: “Netflix will be discontinuing support for some first-generation Fire TV devices, which were introduced more than 10 years ago.

“Netflix remains available on all other Fire TV devices.”

Some of the older devices have stopped being supported by Amazon already and haven’t received and update since 2021.

The devices will still work as normal but will lose access to Netflix with the app no longer working on the old platforms.

Other streaming apps will still be avaliable on the old devices with Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video and ITV Hub continuing to work for now.

When upgrading to a new model users can send their old device to Amazon for a massive 20% off at checkout.

Newer platforms will still support Netflix and get updates with new and interesting features.

If you don’t want to upgrade your device then you should cancel your subscription to avoid paying for tech you aren’t using.
