Net Zero schemes will be SLASHED to pay for £50bn mega defence war chest under Tory plans, says Kemi Badenoch

NET Zero schemes would be slashed to pay for a mega defence warchest under Tory plans announced today.

Kemi Badenoch has pledged a £50billion sovereign defence fund to increase Britain’s battle-readiness at a time of increasing global threats.

The cash pot would be used to invest in cutting-edge tech like drones while also weaning off Chinese supply chains.

The Conservative leader wants to divert £11billion from the National Wealth Fund which she claims is currently paying for too many eco projects.

A further £33billion will be raised from private finance and £6billion from reallocating existing research money.

Ms Badenich said: “The next Conservative Government will move funding from Ed Miliband’s vanity Net Zero projects and use it to back our military to accelerate their war readiness.

“We must ensure our Armed Forces are equipped and ready to defend our country.

“Because defence of the realm must be the first priority of any Government.

“In the face of growing threats we should be investing more in defence, yet all we see from this Labour Government is heel dragging and vague promises.”

Labour have also so far failed to produce their defence investment plan that was promised in the autumn.

Last week, The Sun reported that Labour’s plan to get the UK to Net Zero by 2050 could end up costing every household in Britain £500 a year.

Ministers were warned that transitioning to meet green targets over the next 25 years could cost the country a staggering £350 billion more than taking a slower approach.
