Neil Warnock, 77, set to resign as Torquay manager after two weeks as club make replacement decision

NEIL WARNOCK is expected to step down as manager of Torquay United after two weeks in the role.

The veteran EFL boss, 77, stepped into the unpaid role as interim boss after the club sacked manager Paul Wotton late last month.

Warnock, who credited the club with saving his managerial career after a stint with them in 1993, answered the call from the sixth-tier side as they looked for someone to steady the ship.

But it now seems that his return to management has run its course, with the boss revealing that the club’s hunt for a more permanent appointment is nearing its end.

Warnock was asked by club media on Thursday if he expected himself to still be in charge for Torquay’s upcoming fixture against Chesham United today.

He replied: “No, I expect somebody in by then. The interview process has taken place, they have got in mind the people or the person that they want.

“Now it is just a matter of the board dealing with it really.

“I am still going to be taking training on Friday, because the lads need to know the shape and the personnel, we need to know who’s injured and who isn’t.

Warnock added that though he had some insight into the appointment of the new manager, he did not influence the decision at all.

He continued: “I know the candidates, but I said to the board that they have to do their due diligence.

“They have spoken to me about it, but I haven’t really given an opinion. They need to appoint who they feel is the right one, having made the decision to let Paul (Wotton) go.

“I am sure they’re working really hard, they’ve been all over the place in the past couple of days – welcome to my world!

“They’ve been doing hard work getting interviews, we’ll have to wait and see now.”

With the new boss yet to be announced, Warnock is expected to have one last hurrah in the dugout against Chesham today.

But it would be a surprise to see the veteran manager still in charge for next week’s trip to KSI-backed Dagenham and Redbridge.
