A SAVVY mother has shared how she created a DIY kitchen island using a £40 IKEA buy.
So if you want to upgrade your kitchen but without breaking the bank, you’ve come to the right place and will need to take notes.

Claudia Gorete, a DIY enthusiast, revealed that her friend recently moved house and wanted a table to separate the living room and the kitchen in her open-plan space.
That’s where Claudia stepped in and used a 77x112cm KALLAX Shelving unit from IKEA, which retails at £40.
Posting on social media, Claudia gave users a step-by-step tutorial on how she created the kitchen island using the IKEA KALLAX unit – which many have since described as “genius.”
The bargain hunter mum recognised that using a KALLAX unit would not look great in her friend’s home, but provide her with storage too.
After getting her hands on the KALLAX unit, Claudia and her pal bought some £6.99 adjustable metal furniture legs from B&Q which they attached to the bottom of the unit.
To save cash, rather than buying a £90 kitchen countertop to put on top of the KALLAX unit, Claudia and her savvy friend used MDF instead, so they could stay “on a budget.”
Claudia confirmed that she cut a corner out of the MDF so the unit would fit around the wall and then used Gorilla wood glue to stick the MDF to the KALLAX unit, which they later covered with vinyl paper.
To ensure that the kitchen island was child-safe, Claudia drilled the unit into the wall.
She explained: “We used these L-shape brackets on the wall to make sure the island wouldn’t move, and also, it’s safe, especially when you have children – trust me, this island is not gonna move, it’s so firm now.”
Showing off the finished kitchen island, which we think looks fabulous, the content creator gushed: “This was the final result – it came out better than what I was expecting.
“I was so jealous of her. I loved it, she loved it, and let me know in the comments what you guys think.”
