A man, 25, who was arrested at the scene has been charged by gardai.

He was due to appear in front of Cork City District Court this afternoon.

Stella and her husband Brian were rushed to hospital suffering from multiple stab wounds after being attacked in Shrewsbury Downs, off the Ballinlough Road on the southside of the city.

Brian, 62, last night remained in a serious but stable condition in Cork University Hospital.

The incident happened at around 9.15pm on Monday. The couple were attacked in their home with what cops believe was a kitchen knife.

The assault then continued outside their house, where Ms Gallagher made a brave attempt to run and get help as her husband was attacked in the driveway and stabbed multiple times.

The attacker then caught up with Ms Gallagher close to her home and stabbed her a number of times.

Gardai rushed to the scene including members of the Armed Support Unit who disarmed the suspect. The knife was seized and bagged for forensic examination.

Paramedics were at the house soon after the gardai and rendered medical assistance to Ms Gallagher and her husband before taking them by ambulance to CUH where a medical team was waiting to tend to them.

Unfortunately they could not save the mum of four grown-up children.

GARDA PROBE

Gardai have carried out door to door enquiries and have been speaking to neighbours as well as securing any CCTV or door-cam footage in the immediate vicinity of the house.

Neighbours were shocked by the incident, describing the couple as quiet and well-respected in the area.

One person told Paul Byrne of 96FM: “This is a very safe neighbourhood.

“Nothing like this has ever happened here. It is very frightening to think something like this could happen here.”

An incident room has been established in Anglesea Street Garda Station and a family liaison officer has been appointed to support the family of the deceased woman.

A garda spokesperson added: “Gardai are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021 452 2000.”
