Mother-of-six, 33, dies in hospital two days after she was found with head injuries: Man is charged

A mother-of-six has died in hospital two days after being found with head injuries and a man has been charged with her murder.

Lisa Smith, 33, from Almondbury, West Yorkshire, died on Sunday afternoon after suffering grave head injuries during a ‘serious assault’ in the early hours of Friday morning, police said.

Gareth Brook, 34, was initially charged with wounding with intent – but has now been charged with murder following Lisa’s death in hospital.

Officers were called to an address on Fernside Avenue in Huddersfield just before 12.30am in the early hours of Friday, where they found Lisa with grave injuries.

She was rushed to hospital where, despite the best efforts of medics, she died around 65 hours later.

Brook, who lives on the road, was arrested and then remanded in custody on Saturday.

He is due to next appear before Leeds Crown Court on January 16.

Lisa’s heartbroken family have shared a tribute to the much-loved mother and daughter.

Her mother said: ‘This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to share. Lisa Jane Louise Smith fell to sleep at 17:28 on the 21/12/2025.

‘I tucked her in tightly and kissed her goodnight.

‘Lisa had one final party she needed to attend to make sure she could spread some Christmas magic.

‘She did what she does best by helping other families have a special Christmas until she fell fast asleep.

‘From the bottom of all our hearts we can not express how truly grateful we really are for everyone in the community pulling together and making her six beautiful babies Christmas, and lives special.

‘The kindness and love that everyone has shown us has just explained how very loved she really was and still is.

‘Thank you to each and every one of you. Enjoy your final party and well-earned rest.’

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: ‘Proceedings at court will reflect the outcome of the forensic post mortem.’

A GoFundMe appeal set up to support Lisa’s mother had raised more than £12,000 on Monday night.

Her friend Donna Bradshaw wrote: ‘We are heartbroken to share that our dear friend Lisa has been tragically taken from us far too soon.

‘Lisa was a loving daughter, a devoted mum, and a loyal friend whose kindness and strength touched everyone who knew her.

‘She leaves behind beautiful children who were her whole world. No words can describe the pain and loss they, and her family, are facing during this unimaginable time.

‘We are raising funds to help support Lisa’s mum with funeral expenses and to ease the financial burden of caring for the children as they begin life without their mum.

‘Any contribution, no matter how small, will help give the family some comfort and support during this devastating period.

‘If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this page to help us honour Lisa’s memory and show her children that they are surrounded by love and care.

‘Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness, generosity, and support.’
