More than ten pubs, restaurants and hotels across UK ‘going bust every day’

MORE than ten pubs, restaurants or hotels across the UK are going bust every day, a survey claims.

Desperate hospitality chiefs pleaded with Chancellor Rachel Reeves to stem the devastating closures by throwing the struggling sector a lifeline in her autumn Budget.

“Worrying” statistics show in July there were 327 insolvencies in the accommodation and food services industry, which includes food pubs, cafés, restaurants and hotels.

The wipe out is a 5% increase on the 306 venues that went belly up in June and means the equivalent of over 10 outlets are lost every single day.

Saxon Moseley, of analysts RSM UK, said: “The continued uptick in insolvencies is a worrying trend but one we have been forecasting for several months now.

“The leisure and hospitality sector has had a difficult year with higher staff costs and rising inflation continuing to bear down on businesses already struggling with lower consumer confidence.”

Mr Moseley added: “Many operators are now in survival mode.

“As a key creator of jobs, the sector is a cornerstone for the UK economy and therefore a delicate hospitality industry presents an economic headache for the Chancellor.

“Taking steps to overhaul the business rates system, as well as supporting the industry to respond to recent tax increases, would help alleviate pressure on operators, keep more businesses solvent and in turn allow them to invest in jobs for the future.”

Earlier this month, a report from business recovery firm Buchler Phillips revealed 1,706 restaurants and inns disappeared from our towns, cities and villages in the first half of 2025.

More than 300 insolvencies were also recorded in June, meaning it is the first time hospitality insolvencies have risen for three consecutive months since 2022, with 296 venues lost in May.
