Moment woman fractures her shoulder after falling into her recycling bin trying to clean it out

This is the moment a woman landed herself in A&E after fracturing her shoulder when falling into a recycling bin as she cleaned it out.

Jane Green, 63, was mid-soaping down and washing the receptacle on her drive when its wheels rolled out from underneath her, crashing into the ground.

Ms Green, a former secretary from Carshalton, Surrey, had been reaching toward the bottom of the bin when it gave way, resulting in the angle of the fall causing a fracture to her shoulder.

After she calling out to her husband for help, a bystander heard the commotion and came to her aid.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, Ms Green had her jumper cut so they could access her injury.

She was then brought to hospital, where an x-ray confirmed she had fractured the joint, and she was sent home in a sling.

Describing the incident, which occurred on March 8, Ms Green said: ‘I’d soaked it in water and then it was a lovely day, and I thought I’d give it a final clean and that’s when it happened.

‘I put my head in and then the bin slid away and I fell inside it!

‘It was on its side, and I clambered out of it and knew that I’d done something quite dramatic.

‘It’s still very painful now. I won’t be going near that wheelie bin again!’

Ms Green’s fall comes just as the government’s new Simpler Recycling policy is due to be implemented on March 31.

The shake-up, which is designed to create a universal standard for rubbish collection, means that homes across the country will no longer need to put their waste in several different bins.

Instead, homes will get four bins designated for residual waste, food waste, paper and card, and all other dry recyclable materials.

However, the new policy means 39 items must not be placed in recycling bins – and failure to follow the new rules can result in a £60-80 penalty notice.

Items including candles, drinking glasses, irons, pips, kettles, sawdust and wet wipes must not be thrown in the recycling by residents.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said the new rules will ensure ‘everything that can be collected for household recycling is collected in every region.’
