Moment suspected thief’s desperate escape bid is foiled after he gets trapped on roof of shed

This is the moment a suspected thief’s desperate escape bid is foiled after he gets stuck on the roof of a shed.

The 31-year-old man was pursued by officers in Doncaster after he failed to stop for police.

He then tried to lose officers from South Yorkshire Police by hopping from garden to garden – but didn’t realise that a helicopter was tracking his every move.

In footage taken from above, the suspect can be seen hiding inside a shed when he is spotted by the helicopter.

Once he realises he has been spotted, the man makes a last ditch effort to avoid arrest by clambering onto the shed’s roof.

Officers eventually manage to bring him down where he is promptly arrested on suspicion of numerous offences including two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a knife or bladed article, and recall to prison.

A 20-year-old man, who also tried to flee, was arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, failing to stop, and drug possession offences.

After a search, officers found two stolen vehicles nearby, which were returned to their rightful owners.

PC Gabi Marriott, who arrested the suspect, said: ‘This was an excellent bit of teamwork with eyes on the ground and in the sky working in tandem to track a wanted man and ensure he was apprehended.

‘Despite his best efforts to evade capture, he was never out of sight thanks to the NPAS aircraft and it’s a fantastic resource we can call on when needed.

‘To locate two stolen vehicles and return them to their owners is also incredibly satisfying. We know vehicle crime and the theft of vehicles has a huge impact on people’s livelihoods and creates fear and uncertainty in local communities.

‘We will continue to hunt down those involved in this criminality and I would urge people to make themselves aware of simple steps they can follow to ensure thieves don’t prosper and can’t access your vehicles.’
