Moment police rider knocks suspect off his motorbike after ‘gang’s dangerous ride-out’ through city centre

This is the moment a police rider knocks a suspect off his motorbike after tracking down a suspected gang on a city centre ride-out.

Footage taken from an aerial position shows the group of yobs ignoring red lights, weaving between cars and speeding through junctions on Saturday, February 1, in Leeds.

The group were spotted by the National Police Air Service, with a squad of officers quickly dispatched to stop them.

Bodycam footage captures one officer chasing a 27-year-old man believed to be a ‘leader’ of the ride-out through Chapelton, near the centre of Leeds.

With the suspect resisting arrest on a red motorbike, the policeman trails him across a busy dual carriageway and down a lane before eventually catching up in a side street.

Using what the force describes as ‘tactical contact’, the officer then rams his bike into the rider and knocks him off the vehicle.

But the defiant biker continues his mission to avoid arrest on foot, with the policeman eventually nabbing him.

The motorbike rider was arrested on suspicion of driving offences, including dangerous driving, and released on bail.

Chief Inspector James Farrar, head of the Roads Policing Unit, said: ‘We know that the anti-social and criminal use of off-road bikes is a big concern in our communities and that the public support us in taking firm action to tackle it.

‘Dealing with such antisocial behaviour and denying criminals the use of the road remains one of our top priorities and it’s why we’ve invested in the specialist equipment to allow us the capability to do so.

‘It also forms part of our Vision Zero ambitions to reduce the number of serious and fatal injury collisions on our roads.

‘With the support of NPAS there is nowhere to hide and, as this incident shows, we will take robust action to stop these vehicles where it is safe and proportionate to do so.’
