THIS is the moment a reckless driver films himself downing a can of Stella at the wheel before a horror crash injuring two people.
The footage shows the motorist opening a can of lager one-handed while steering with the other as he hurtles along the A133 in Essex at 90mph.
John Doocey was behind the wheel of a Nissan flatbed van when he attempted a dangerous overtake along the busy carriageway at Frating just after 7pm on August 3.
The reckless 30-year-old sent his van flying off the rain-soaked road and was jailed after seriously injuring two passengers.
An Essex Police spokesperson said the collision “could easily have been fatal.”
Officers recovered the shocking footage from Doocey’s phone.
They found Doocey was driving at extreme speed in torrential rain, with poor visibility and standing water, making conditions treacherous.
Moments after the risky manoeuvre, Doocey completely lost control.
The van fishtailed, careered off the carriageway, rolled over and smashed into a tree.
One passenger managed to escape the wreckage, but another was trapped inside until emergency crews arrived.
The trapped passenger suffered a potentially life-changing spinal injury, while the other was left with a broken ankle, according to the force.
Doocey, originally from East Suffolk, was arrested at the scene and later charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He admitted the offences at Ipswich Crown Court on October 8 and was jailed for three years.
The dangerous driver has also been banned from the roads for three years.
He will have to pass an extended driving retest before being allowed back behind the wheel.
PC Harry Townsend from Essex Police said: “Driving is a privilege and not a right and John Doocey’s actions were reckless.
“He paid no attention to the conditions and drove way above his capability, causing a collision which has had a significant impact.
“He is responsible for his two passengers being left with injuries which could affect them for the rest of their lives.
The crash comes just weeks after another horror incident on Essex’s roads, in which a police officer tragically died after losing control of his motorbike and hitting the central barrier.
PC Townsend continued: “More than 50 people have died on Essex’s roads and speed has been a contributing factor to several of the most serious incidents that we’ve seen.
“If you’re behind the wheel you have a responsibility to look after the other people in your vehicle and the other people on the road.
“Looking at the speed and reckless nature of John Doocey’s driving, this collision could easily have been a fatal one.
“I am pleased he will not be able to get back in the driver’s seat of a vehicle for the foreseeable future.”
