Moment drunk driver is spotted driving along tram lines by concerned paramedic – who drags him out of car

This is the moment a ‘heavily intoxicated’ motorist drove along a tram track near a university before a concerned paramedic spotted him and dragged him from the vehicle.

Levi Gomez, 27, was captured on CCTV driving along the line at Nottingham‘s University Boulevard tram stop on April 6 last year.

Gomez, of St Ann’s, Nottingham, tailgated a tram in his black Vauxhall Insignia as it headed toward Queen’s Medical Centre hospital at approximately 6.30am.

He paused outside Nottingham Hockey Centre but inexplicably remained on the track and inside his car – despite the danger to himself and others.

It was only after a passing St John’s Ambulance paramedic saw Gomez’s car on the tracks and pulled over that he was removed from the vehicle.

Gomez proceeded to assault the ambulance worker and after police were called, was charged with multiple offences.

On Tuesday at Nottingham Crown Court Gomez was handed a 10 month jail sentence, suspended for two years and was disqualified from driving for five years.

The court heard that upon being arrested, he appeared to be heavily intoxicated but refused to be tested for drugs and alcohol.

However, a deal bag of cannabis was seized from the vehicle, along with a number of bottles of alcohol.

Gomez pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without a licence, possession of a Class B drug, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and assaulting an emergency worker.

Sentencing him, Judge Michael Auty KC said: ‘These are serious matters.

‘When somebody behaves like this, it puts the lives of innocent people at risk.

‘This could have been infinitely more serious.’

Judge Auty said the offences crossed the custodial threshold but added he was prepared to give Gomez ‘one last chance’ to stay out of prison and obtain professional treatment for his mental health.

Gomez must also abstain from consuming alcohol for 120 days and complete 20 rehabilitation activity days.

Sergeant James Rimmington, of Nottinghamshire Police, said afterwards: ‘Driving along a tram-only track is incredibly dangerous and I’d like to commend the paramedic for intervening in the way he did.

‘Thanks to his brave actions and the swift response of our officers, no-one was harmed in this incident.

‘Gomez showed absolutely no regard for anyone’s safety, including his own, by driving in such a dangerous manner and I am pleased he has been made accountable for his actions.’
