MINISTERS are looking at putting Portakabin-style accommodation on military bases to deal with the asylum crisis.

Sources said they were looking for hardstanding sites on which they could build prefab accommodation.

Sir Keir Starmer has ordered departments to shut down asylum hotels and find alternative accommodation.

It was confirmed this week that Cameron Barracks in Inverness and Crowborough training camp in East Sussex army will be used to house a total of about 900 men by the end of the year.

Defence Secretary John Healey told the Sun on Sunday: “The Prime Minister has asked Defence to step up to provide the Home Office with temporary sites for asylum, and we are.

“We are looking at military sites that can be stood up swiftly as we ease pressure on communities and cut asylum costs.”

More than 36,000 people have crossed the English Channel in small boats since the start of 2025.

And as of June this year, about 32,000 asylum seekers were being housed in hotels.

Ministers are set to unveil a record £9billion revamp for soldiers’ damp and crumbling homes.

Labour’s flagship defence housing strategy will be the biggest overhaul in half a century.

It pledges to modernise or rebuild 40,000 military homes over ten years.

It will also set out plans to build another 100,000 homes for soldiers and civilians on MoD land.

Starmer called the plan a “generational renewal”.
