Meteorologists give catastrophic Storm Fern update as 24IN of snow turns into deadly ice with 1M Americans plunged into darkness: ‘The worst is yet to come’

Meteorologists have warned that the worst of Winter Storm Fern is yet to come as ‘catastrophic ice’ is expected to hit the Northeast on Sunday night.

At least 24 inches of snow is set to blanket the region this evening into Monday morning, before a deep freeze and icy conditions take over in the southern region, the National Weather Service Prediction Center said.  

The predicted ice storm could cause further power outages – as more than one million Americans are already in the dark. So far, 12 deaths have been reported. 

According to the New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services, Sunday gave just a glimpse of what is to come on Monday. 

‘The worst conditions are expected between 12PM today and 12AM Monday,’ the agency said.  

A total of one to two feet of snow is expected to fall in the Empire State, along with coastal flooding, wind and an ‘impactful’ cold front.

Schools across the country, as well as government offices, have already announced closures for Monday. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has urged businesses to let their staff work from home due to safety concerns. 

Storm to only get worse tonight into Monday, meteorologists warn

Sunday brought heavy snow and ice, but Monday is set to be far worse, according to the National Weather Service.

One to two feet of snow will continue to fall in the parts of the Northeast and ‘catastrophic ice’ will take over farther south, the agency said.

The predicted ice storm could cause further power outages as more than one million Americans are already in the dark.

Meanwhile, the New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services, said the worst is yet to come.

‘The worst conditions are expected between 12PM today and 12AM Monday,’ the agency said.

New York State police respond to nearly 250 crashes

New York State police have reported that they responded to nearly 250 crashes from the storm.

About 20 of the crashes resulted in injuries, but no deaths.

Nashville area ‘looks like a war zone’

The Nashville area ‘looks like a war zone,’ sportscaster Clay Travis posted on social media, as he shared footage of trees split apart.

‘It may get worse as temperatures are now dropping and winds are increasing,’ he warned.

Parts of Canada to see nearly two feet

Parts of Canada will see nearly two feet of snow by the time the storm is done.

Environment Canada reported that snow accumulation may exceed 60 cm, particularly in southern Toronto and Mississauga.

Video shared online showed a man shoveling his car out from the snow, in the middle of the road in Indianapolis.

‘Unfortunately so much snow has fallen that its hard to get going again once you stop,’ reporter Max Lewis wrote as he shared the footage.

Mississippi crippled by ice

Mississippi has been crippled by an ice storm, with the state Department of Transportation warning that the roads are ‘treacherous.’

‘We cannot stress enough how important it is for everyone to STAY HOME and not get out on the roads unless there’s a dire emergency,’ the Department of Transportation posted on social media.

‘First responders of all kinds are tirelessly fighting extreme conditions right now for your benefit, and they need your support. Give it to them by avoiding travel so that they can operate as safely as possible.’

More than eight inches recorded in NYC

New York City’s Central Park has recorded 8.8 inches of snow as of 5pm EST, the National Weather Service announced.

Bridgeport, Connecticut, meanwhile, recorded 13 inches, the Newark Airport in New Jersey recorded 9.8 inches and Long Island recorded 11.2 inches.

NBA postpones Mavericks – Bucks game

The NBA has postponed the game between the Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks due to the inclement weather.

The league said the game, which was scheduled for today at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, had to be postponed due to the Mavericks ‘inability to leave Dallas as a result of inclement weather in the area.’
