Melania and Donald Trump mercilessly mocked over serious Christmas photo: ‘Why aren’t they smiling?’

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania have released their annual Christmas photo – but some have pointed out that it doesn’t exactly look like they’re in the holiday spirit in it.

The photo was posted to the official White House account on X Tuesday morning, as the caption wished followers a Merry Christmas.

But immediately, social media users roasted the couple over their serious expressions in the snap.

The image saw the two posing hand-in-hand in front of Christmas decorations, the American flag and flag of the President hanging in the White House.

Both the President and the First Lady were dressed in all-black, as they stared directly into the camera with completely straight faces.

Melania wore a long, sleeveless black dress complete with minimal pearl earrings and a diamond bracelet, while President Trump donned a black tuxedo complete with a black bowtie.

The President finished his look with a pair of shiny, black patent-leather dress shoes.

Although the photo was supposed to be centered around their Christmas message, many on X couldn’t help but point out the fact that they two didn’t appear to be super cheery in the snap.

Some took to the social media platform to make jokes about their lack of smiles, while others went so far as to say it looked like the couple was ‘going to a funeral.’

‘They look like they’re going to a funeral,’ one person wrote.

Another agreed, ‘Gosh, how… um… er…cheerful…?’

‘Why is he not smiling?’ someone else wondered.

A second user lamented, ‘Honestly, terrible choice of a photograph. You must have a better one with them smiling, right?

‘I love these two. They’ve done so much, put up with so much, been bullied so much. Yet every day they fight for us. Please find a better photo. They deserve it.’

‘Would it kill y’all to smile?!’ one X user commented.

‘Aren’t they supposed to be smiling,’ another typed.

A different X user cracked, ‘The genuine lack of smiles go with the black dress.’

The release of their Christmas photo comes just as the First Lady debuted the trailer for her new documentary, titled Melania, which will premiere in theatres on January 30.

The 104-minute documentary focuses on the 20 days leading up to the inauguration of her husband.

Amazon secured the film for $40 million – the largest documentary deal in history – after beating rivals Disney, Netflix and Paramount in a ferocious bidding war.

The trailer opened with a showstopping moment as the First Lady prepared to stride into the Capitol rotunda in her now-iconic inauguration ensemble.

‘Here we go again,’ she said, giving a knowing smile to the camera beneath her wide-brimmed boater-style hat.

Behind-the-scenes footage also captured tender family moments with son Barron and her father, while also shining a light on the rigorous security standards that surround the First Family.

In another fascinating moment in the trailer, the First Lady was seen on an intimate phone call with her husband from the penthouse at Trump Tower in Manhattan.

‘Hi, Mr. President,’ she can be heard saying. ‘Congratulations.’

Trump replied with energy and enthusiasm, ‘Did you watch it?’

Melania said casually, ‘I did not. Yeah, I will see it on the news.’
