PETER SCHMEICHEL has warned Jason Wilcox that his “ego” should not determine who manages Manchester United.
Ruben Amorim was axed by the Red Devils on Monday – the day after a stormy press conference in which he called out the club’s hierarchy.
Amorim repeatedly stated that he was the United “manager”, not the “head coach”.
SunSport reported that director of football Wilcox had billed himself as “like a manager” behind the scenes and an irked Amorim had caught wind.
There was understood to be further friction between the pair during a meeting in which Wilcox questioned Amorim’s tactics.
United do not have a permanent replacement for Amorim lined up and have interviewed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick about taking interim charge until the end of the season.
Goalkeeping legend Schmeichel – winner of five Premier League titles with United – can’t make head nor tail of the situation.
He told Viaplay: “‘I was really, really surprised.
“I hadn’t seen that coming, and I can’t make sense of it. I still cannot make sense of why.
“When you speak to people from within, they say, ‘It was about time we did that, we’ve been unhappy’.

“But why pick that moment? That moment, it doesn’t make sense to me. Why? Why now? Why not back in October, for instance?
“If Jason Wilcox feels that he was insulted by whatever happened in that meeting… it’s not his ego that determines or decides who the manager is.
“They can say, ‘Okay, that’s not great. It’s difficult to work with this guy.’ Whatever they’re thinking, pick your time.
“Why put the club back again? No matter what they do now, it’s always going to put them back.”
Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher took temporary charge for United’s 2-2 draw at Burnley on Wednesday.
He looks set to be replaced by either Carrick or Solskjaer until the end of the campaign, when the likes of Oliver Glasner and Roberto De Zerbi are expected to be in the frame for the permanent position.
