Man, 23, is charged over crash that killed a four-year-old girl and injured three others

A man has been charged after a four-year-old girl was killed in a fatal car crash.

Mayar Yahia died after being hit by a silver Vauxhall Corsa in April 2024 in Birmingham on Upper Highgate Street at around 9.45pm. 

Three other people suffered injuries which were not serious. 

Javonnie Tavener, 23, has been charged with causing death by careless driving, causing death whilst driving uninsured and two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving.

The young man appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday and has been remanded in custody to appear at the city’s Crown Court on July 30.

At the time of Mayar’s tragic death, her heartbroken father spoke out in a statement released via West Midlands Police.

He said: ‘It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share the devastating loss of our cherished daughter, Mayar.

‘She was an extraordinary young girl, only four-years-old, full of life and joy, and her absence leaves an irreplaceable void in our lives.
