A MAJOR UK motorway bridge used by 80,000 drivers a day has closed after a defect, forcing motorists onto long diversions and causing major disruption.
The M48 Severn Bridge, linking England and Wales, was shut at around 1pm today, for emergency repairs, with Traffic Wales urging drivers to divert via the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge instead.

A spokesman for Traffic Wales said: “The M48 Severn Bridge is closed in both directions due to emergency works.
“Further updates to be issued once it has reopened. Drivers are being diverted via J22 Prince of Wales Bridge.”
The closure comes amid severe travel problems across the country after a major incident was declared and four “danger to life” flood warnings were issued as Storm Claudia sweeps through Wales.
