Major rescue operation launched as girl goes missing after falling into reservoir near dam

A major search has been launched after a teenage girl fell into the water at a beauty spot near Rochdale.

The youngster, whose age has not been confirmed, is missing following reports she fell into a reservoir at Baitings Dam on Wednesday afternoon.

West Yorkshire Police officers, along with fire and rescue and paramedics, descended on the large body of water in Ripponden shortly after 1.17pm.

Water rescue teams, incident response teams and other services, are continuing to search the reservoir this evening after efforts to find the girl have been unsuccessful.

The ongoing operation is focused on the area around Baitings Dam, a large water supply reservoir managed by Yorkshire Water, situated in the valley of the River Ryburn.

Four West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews were also called to the reservoir as well as firefighters from Littleborough crew. 

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service also confirmed it’s Hazardous Area Response Team is at the scene.

A police spokesperson said: ‘Shortly after 1.17pm this afternoon, police were called to a report a girl had fallen into water at Baitings Dam near Ripponden.

‘Initially police, fire and ambulance were deployed to the scene, but the teenage girl could not be located. 

‘Searches are continuing this evening by underwater search teams, to try and locate her
