A MAJOR UK motorway has been closed after a car burst into flames, prompting a massive emergency response.
Drivers on the M5 this morning faced massive delays in the wake of the car fire chaos.
The incident happened on the southbound carriageway from junction 2 for the A4123 Wolverhampton Road to junction 3 for the A456 Quinton Expressway.
Two fire service crews were scrambled to respond to the blaze on the hard shoulder this morning.
A red Vauxhall was seen spewing thick clouds of smoke as firefighters desperately tried to get the inferno under control.
There have been no reports of any injuries in the incident.
While fire crews battled the blaze two lanes of the busy road were completely closed off.
A fire service spokeswoman told BirminghamLive: “We received a call at 10.08am to a car well alright fire on the motorway hard shoulder of the M5.
“We sent two crews, one from Smethwick and one from Haden Cross.
“They are still in attendance.”
A third lane of the motorway remains open to allow limited traffic to flow along the road.
Drivers are warned to expect delays.
