Major high street chain with 800 stores to close 11 shops TODAY as 48 to shut for good

A MAJOR high street chain is shutting 11 more branches today as it continues with a big restructure.

Poundland has launched a big closing down sale, with prices in some of the stores cut by up to 75%.

It comes after the high street staple confirmed it would shut 48 locations this month.

So far in August it has closed 37 branches – with 11 more following today.

Poundland currently has around 800 stores nationwide but it hopes to slash this number to between 650 and 700.

This includes 68 stores by mid-October, as well as extra stores closing when their leases expire and are not renewed.

The news comes after Poundland was saved from collapse this week.

The High Court approved restructuring plans just days before the company was due to run out of money

Barristers warned that the chain needed approval to shut stores, cut rents and downsize its workforce to avoid running out of cash by September 7.

Poundland was bought by Gordon Brothers for £1 in June and they laid out plans to invest £90million to rescue the business.

The restructuring plan approved by the High Court included the closure of 68 stores, cutting 1,000 jobs and shutting two warehouses, which will affect 350 workers.

Online sales will also stop and rents will be reduced on unprofitable stores.

Poundland began to close stores to save money, but the company still had to pay for the leases.

But now that the restructure has been approved, it can give up these leases to reduce costs.

A further 16 stores, which have not yet been confirmed, are also due to close.

The restructure also includes rent cuts at up to 180 stores and the closure of its frozen food and online shopping.

Meanwhile, the Darton frozen food distribution centre will shut later this year.

This will mean online shopping and frozen food will no longer be offered by Poundland.

The Bilston national distribution centre is also set to close in early 2026.

Come September 16, shoppers will no longer be able to buy products online and its loyalty scheme, Poundland Perks, will be axed.

Customers who have signed up to the Poundland Perks app have until January 15, 2026, to use their reward vouchers.

But Poundland plans to expand its £1 product range and focus on womenswear and seasonal items if the restructure goes ahead.
