Major high street chain closing two stores today as another 12 set to disappear by the end of the year

A MAJOR high street chain is shutting two of its stores for good today.

Poundland is closing its stores in Oldham, Manchester, and Ballymena, County Antrim, as part of a huge wave of closures.

Locals in Oldham said the closure was a “sign of the town’s decline”.

Resident David Johnson told the Manchester Evening News that the store had already been nearly empty before the closure.

“Bare empty shelves, hardly anything left… My commiserations to the staff working there, hopefully they find another job after this,” he said.

The discount chain is shutting a further 12 by the end of the year, including its locations in Brighton and Weston-Super-Mare.
