TODDLERS can get free flu vaccines from pharmacies for the first time this year, as well as from GP practices.
The nasal spray offered to two and three-year-olds before winter will be available at 4,000 chemists around the country in a bid to make it easier for families.
An estimated 1.2million tots will be eligible from next week, in addition to more than 10million older people.
Flu and other viruses put massive strain on hospitals every winter, and kill thousands of people.
NHS England’s chief nurse Duncan Barton said: “Flu can make young children and toddlers seriously unwell, so we’re making it easier than ever before to get the vaccine closer to home.
“The vaccine is typically given to toddlers as a quick, painless spray up the nose and it is safe, effective, and proven to help prevent hospitalisations from flu.
“I urge all parents to bring their children forward.”
Parents and eligible patients can book vaccinations on the NHS app or website, or through their GP practice.
Claire Nevinson, superintendent pharmacist at Boots, which will offer the vaccines, said: “The best time for your child to have the flu vaccination for maximum protection is in the autumn months before the virus begins to circulate widely.
“It usually takes around 10 to 14 days to be protected, so it’s best to book them in as early as you can.”
