M4 closed ‘for several hours’ as lorry erupts into flames with rush hour drivers facing long delays

A MAJOR motorway has been closed for several hours with drivers facing delays before the morning rush hour.

The M4 is closed on Thursday, January 29 westbound between J18 (Bath) and J19 (M32 Bristol) due to a lorry fire.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 5.30am after reports a HGV carrying paper was on fire.

Motorists were brought to a standstill with all traffic stationary on the M4 westbound carriageway.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service and Avon and Somerset Police are at the scene.

Traffic officers are implementing strategic closures.

National Highways has said: “Due to a lorry fire, the #M4 is closed westbound between J18 (#Bath) and J19 (#M32 #Bristol).

“@AvonFireRescue and @ASPolice are en route with #TrafficOfficers implementing strategic closures.”
