A FIERCE lorry fire has broken out on the M1, with two lanes closed causing severe disruption.

The M1 southbound has ground to a halt due to the lane closures on the M1 southbound between Northampton and Milton Keynes.

Half of the lanes are closed on that section of the motorway, with images showing a lorry engulfed in flames at the side of the road.

Emergency services are en-route to scene.

All lanes were initially shut, though two have now been re-opened.

National Highways East said: “Traffic has now been released in lane 4 on the #M1 southbound between J15 (#Northampton) and J14 (#MiltonKeynes).

“All other lanes remain closed at this time whilst the fire service continue to work at the scene.”

It warned drivers of an hour delay and six miles of congestion approaching the site of the fire.

Drivers have been urged to “consider alternative routes”.
