The first Merseyside derby of the season kicks off on Saturday lunchtime, as Everton make the short trip across the city to face fierce rivals Liverpool.

No longer separated by just 983 metres, the two clubs now sit a full two miles apart following Everton’s move to the impressive Hill Dickenson Stadium.

Yet despite the increased distance, the rivalry remains as intense as ever.

Liverpool come into the clash as strong favourites – and it’s easy to see why bookmakers are backing Arne Slot’s men to collect all three points.

Fresh from yet another dramatic Champions League win over Atletico Madrid, the Reds have hit the ground running in their defence of the Premier League title. Four wins from four see them sitting three points clear at the top of the table, and victory on Saturday would mark just the fifth time they’ve opened a Premier League campaign with five straight wins.

Liverpool also boast a formidable record in this fixture. The Reds have lost just one of their last 28 home games against Everton in all competitions (W17 D10), and have won each of the last four meetings at Anfield.

Liverpool have netted 47 goals in just 21 home league games under Slot. Should they score three more this weekend, the Dutchman would become the fifth-fastest manager in Premier League history to reach 50 home goals.

The availability of £120million forward Alexander Isak, who made his club debut in midweek, could offer even more firepower.

However, while goals have been flowing freely, Liverpool’s defensive performances have been somewhat inconsistent. Though they’ve kept clean sheets against both Burnley and Arsenal, those displays were offset by conceding six goals in total to Bournemouth, Newcastle, and Atletico Madrid.

As for the visitors, Everton arrive in confident mood after a strong start to the campaign. David Moyes’ side have taken seven points from a possible 12 and sit sixth in the table.

The headline arrival of Jack Grealish has undoubtedly transformed Everton’s attacking threat, but the supporting cast has also impressed. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Iliman Ndiaye have been standout performers, while young German midfielder Merlin Rohl caught the eye with a lively cameo last weekend.

Still, history is not on Moyes’ side when it comes to trips across Stanley Park.

The Scot has never won a Premier League match at Anfield in 20 attempts (D6 L14). That said, Everton’s away form has improved markedly under his leadership – they’ve won six of their last 11 league matches on the road (D2 L3), matching their total from the previous 30 combined.

I just can’t see beyond David Moyes’ dismal record at Anfield.

As mentioned, the Scot has never won a Premier League game there in 20 attempts (D6 L14). Liverpool, meanwhile, have lost just one of their last 28 home meetings with Everton in all competitions.

The Toffees have managed three clean sheets in their last four, but the stats suggest they’ve ridden their luck a bit defensively having outperformed their expected goals conceded by 3.21 – the third-highest overperformance in the division.

That said, I do expect the Toffees to get on the scoresheet. Liverpool endured an intense 94-minute slog against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, and that effort could take a toll. With the likes of Jack Grealish, Iliman Ndiaye, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in form, Everton have enough attacking quality.

Penalty

We’re backing Liverpool to score a penalty in Sunday’s Merseyside derby at a fairly sizeable 15/4.

The Reds have been awarded spot kicks in their last two outings against both Burnley and Atletico Madrid, while the visiting Toffees have conceded one from their two away days this season.
