Lewis Capaldi makes surprise return to stage after two years out of the spotlight

On Friday night, Lewis, who went on hiatus over health concerns in 2023, was a surprise guest at fellow musician Tom Walker’s show.

Tom’s show was for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) at Assembly Halls in Edinburgh.

After Tom performed, fans were told not to rush out of the venue but instead to stay where they were for a surprise.

Lewis then took to the stage to perform six of his songs, including his smash hit Someone You Loved.

The gig banned attendees from using their mobiles to record anything for the entire duration, meaning no videos have made their way online.

But fans did take to social media after the surprise appearance.

One person said it was “the best thing ever” and another admitted they were “close to tears” during his set.

Tom spoke to the BBC after Friday night’s event.

“We’ve bumped into each other a few times over the years backstage at [festivals] and events, and he’s a total legend,” Tom said.

“I know how much pressure this industry can put on artists at times, especially after a bit of a break.

“So, for him to be able to play a little secret gig in a safe space without all the phones, the noise and the expectations was perfect. I’m buzzing to have been a part of it,” he went on.

Two years ago, Lewis went on hiatus over health concerns amid his Tourette’s battle.

The Scottish singer announced he would be taking a break away from the spotlight for his mental health after performing at Glastonbury in June 2023 where he struggled with his Tourette’s symptoms.

Almost exactly two years ago at iconic festival Glastonbury, Lewis returned to the stage despite being “sh*t scared” to perform.

Ahead of his performance, Lewis had taken three weeks out to “rest and recover” for a mental health break.

But despite his three weeks of resting and relaxing, in the middle of his set, Lewis confessed that he was struggling with his Tourette’s.

Heard coughing throughout the show, Lewis was struggling as his supportive fans sang his hit Someone You Love for him.

After his performance, Lewis decided to take a longer break from performing.

Writing a statement on social media, Lewis said: “The fact that this probably won’t come as a surprise doesn’t make it any easier to write.

“I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this and I’d hoped 3 weeks away would sort me out.

“But the truth is I’m still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette’s and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come.

“I’m so incredibly sorry to everyone who had planned to come to a show before the end of the year but I need to feel well to perform at the standard you all deserve.

“Playing for you every night is all I’ve ever dreamed of, so this has been the most difficult decision of my life. I’ll be back as soon as I possibly can.”

This comes after Yungblud, who is close pals with Lewis, recently spoke to us about how Lewis is getting his mental health back on track.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun, he said: “I have heard his new music and it sounds great. He is getting his mental health right.”
