ROYAL LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB carried out a controlled bomb explosion on the course after a World World Two-era artillery shell was found.
The incident forced all play to be stopped with a bomb squad called in to deal with the situation.

A spokesperson for the course said: “We can confirm that emergency services are at The Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake following a report that a suspected unexploded artillery shell was found on the course.
“At around 12.30pm today, Friday December 12, officers were called to a report that a suspected device was found on the golf course.
“The site has been cordoned off whilst emergency services are at the golf course.
“Members of the public are advised to avoid the area. Thank you for your patience whilst we investigate this incident.”
The course, which was founded in 1869, has hosted The Open Championship 13 times, including more recently in 2023.
Tiger Woods won there in 2006 before Rory McIlroy did the same in 2014.
Now, images and videos of the explosion have been released with the club’s Instagram page saying: “An unexpected pause on the links today as historic ground revealed a reminder of the past.
“This week, an unexploded artillery shell was found on the course, after members of our staff undertaking routine drainage work discovered the explosive buried in the ground.

“Following a successful controlled explosion carried out by specialists, the site was made safe and we thank emergency services for their professionalism.”
This is not the first time that such measures have been taken, either.
In 1944, the removal of mines placed on the course amid fears of a land invasion by Germany during WW2 saw the fairways and course severely damaged.
Remainders from the war appear to have gone undetected with a large chunk of ground taken out in the process this time round.
